Welcome!

Hi! Welcome to my myriad of foodie excursions! If it is comestible I will eat it! I use to be a picky eater but I realized that I’ve been missing out! If you don't open up your palate, YOU HAVE NOT LIVED. I learned to appreciate other cultures through different cuisines & I have TONS of favorites! Caribbean (I’m an east coast girl at heart! Jamaican patties were my staple!), Middle Eastern (I CRAVE basmati rice.. like CRAVE), sushi & Izakaya (if I die tomorrow I would like to have uni and ankimo to be the last thing I eat), Italian (I am WEAK to burrata with EVOO & balsamic dressing drizzled all over on a bed of sour dough), Philipino food (Pork sisig is SO effin good!), Indian (garlic naan dipped in tikka marsala MMMM!), AUTHENTIC Mexican (lamb soup from a Mexican crawl in East LA WOWED me!) and to my own very ethnic food such as Vietnamese (bo kho, bo luc lac, bun rieu, etc. etc. ETC!), Hainanese (I love Savoy!) and French (uhh EVERYTHING!). I'm the happiest when I find a great hole in the wall, appreciate the occasional fine dining experience (not too often to lose its luster), and best of all, good ol’ home cooking. I just love ALL FOOD.

Giving Osteria Mamma a Try

I was anticipating to try Osteria Mamma ever since they opened up 2 months ago.  I never been to their sister restaurant Osteria La Buca yet but from the Yelp reviews Osteria Mamma looked promising.

The complimentary bread came with a light marinara sauce that tasted how a mother would make it.
Tagliatelle al Fumo
I didn't order this one but I thought it was pretty good.  It was quite simple and very similar to Angelini Osteria's style in terms of not being too greasy.  It was lightly cheesey with a nice pink sauce that wasn't too creamy.  The tagliatelle wasn't overly al dente and very fresh.
Trenette Nere alla Bottarga
Black squid ink trenette, organic cherry tomatoes, shrimp and bottarga
So I heard that this was a must so, of course, I had to order it.  The entree was a bit watery which I thought hindered this from being great.  To look like it does not have sauce on it.... taste wise... it was actually pretty good with a savory flavor.  The shrimp was very succulent and cooked perfectly.  The watery issue kind of killed it for me because parts of the great flavors were washed off resulting in me liking the tagliatelle al fumo more.
Tiramisu
The portion is huge!  It was the best thing I ate here.  Very silky and moist.
Overall I thought Osteria Mamma was good but I've had better at Angelini Osteria.  I would like the pasta dishes to be a bit more flavory and less watery.  The dessert was definitely on point though.  I heard that Osteria La Buca was better but of course AFTER I dined here.  I also thought the portions were a bit small for the price you pay.  The menu looks reasonably priced but you don't get the amount that you pay for..... well except for dessert.  Now that's a generous portion!

Angelini is at a WHOLE 'nother level in terms of price / ambience, so the comparison isn't quite fair? La Buca's entrees were messy, pasta haphazard, pizza limp. The only thing good at La Buca was Mamma in the kitchen. And now she's gone. That squid ink seafood pasta was not suppose to be a cream-based sauced dish...

I thought the squid ink dish was a bit greasy too. We are so picky. Damn us. Haha.
